Podcasts & Love Stories

One of my new favorite weekly NPR programs is called StoryCorps, and it’s all about slices of life. People who want to participate in this program basically go into a sound booth in a trailer, and well. . here’s what NPR’s site says:

At recording booths across America, everyday people interview one another about their lives. StoryCorps creator Dave Isay showcases these first-person stories in this weekly podcast. StoryCorps airs Fridays on NPR’s Morning Edition

I’m not always able to catch the program on Friday mornings, so I subscribed to the free podcast. Earlier this evening, I was listening to some of the ones that I’d missed, and one in particular made me stop everything. Listen. Think about putting down MY memories before they’re or I’m gone. My thoughts and all the “how it happened” things that my kids and grandkids might want to know about me and our family. Hopefully, I’ll be able to recount my stories personally, and whoever wants to know won’t have to just look at my scrapbook pages. Hopefully my kids and grandkids and so on won’t be left with many of the questions I have about all kinds of stuff, random and not.

Here’s a link to one of the stories I listened to tonight. It’s the story of Joanne, a sweet lady in the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s, and Bob, her husband. And here’s another link, one that really had me sobbing, to the a story of Michael and Debora, boyfriend and girlfriend, and the most emotionally painful thing that ever happened to him. Amazing stories, so well told. They were podcast together in StoryCorp 4: Preserving and Making Memories, but you can follow the links to read and hear their stories firsthand.

Check out the site, pick a story or two that look interesting to you, listen, and then come back here. Tell me what you think. . . and if you’re inspired to create something, share, please! I’ll show you mine if you show me yours!
